Using your department's box
For everyone who is not running the box — sign in, put documents in your department's folder, ask, and do the same from home.
Your department has a machine in the office that answers questions from the documents in one folder. This page is what you need to use it. Nothing here needs a terminal; where a step is your administrator's, it says so.
What you need from your administrator
- The address. In the office it looks like
https://nufi.local:3080; the first part is the box's name, which your administrator chose. - Your login. There is no sign-up page — the administrator creates your account and gives you a password. The same login works on every part of the box; you are never asked for a second one.
- The drive password, if the box runs on Ubuntu (user
nufi). On a Mac, an account on that Mac instead. - A join file, only if you will use the box from outside the office.
1. Trust the box's certificate, once
The box makes its own certificate, so the first time a laptop opens it the browser stops with "Your connection is not private". That is not a fault; it is what a private certificate looks like from the outside, and it goes away for good once your laptop trusts it.
Open this page in the office and install the certificate it offers:
http://nufi.local/Until then you can click Advanced → Proceed — the connection is already encrypted, the browser simply cannot tell who signed the certificate. On a managed company laptop that button may be disabled and installing a certificate may need IT; if so, ask them. If the browser refuses to download the file, your administrator can send it to you instead.
2. Sign in
Open https://nufi.local:3080 and sign in with the login you were given. The
agents, the console and the admin panel on the same box accept the same login
without asking again.
3. Your department's folder
Every department has one folder on the box, shared on the network the way any office share is. A document you put in it is knowledge to your department's agent about a minute later, and the agent names the file when it answers from it. Nothing to upload, no button to press — the folder is the whole interface.
| On | Open |
|---|---|
| Windows | \\nufi.local\legal in Explorer's address bar |
| Mac | Finder → Go → Connect to Server → smb://nufi.local/legal |
| Linux | smb://nufi.local/legal in the file manager |
Replace legal with your department. Drop files in; a file still being
copied or still open in Word is waited for, not read half-way. Delete a file
and the agent forgets it. Hidden and temporary files are ignored.
The folder is the department's, not yours: what you put there, your whole department's agent knows. Keep drafts elsewhere until they are meant to be read.
4. Ask
Sign in, pick your department's agent, and ask in plain language. An answer that comes from your documents says which file it came from. Ask about something that is not in the folder and the agent says so — it does not read other departments' folders, and it does not guess. Everything runs on the box in the office; nothing you ask or file leaves it, unless your administrator has pointed the box at a hosted model and told you so.
From home
The box can be reached from anywhere, once your laptop has joined the box's private network. Your administrator does this by sending you a join file.
- Install the Tailscale app from tailscale.com/download and open it once. Nothing to sign up for — the join file does the rest. The first launch asks to add a VPN connection (a system extension on Mac, a network driver on Windows); allow it. On a work-managed laptop this may be blocked by your company's policy — if so, use a personal device or ask IT.
- Run the file you were sent: double-click the
.commandfile on a Mac, the.cmdfile on Windows, the.shfile on Linux. It trusts the box's certificate, connects, maps your drives and opens the box in your browser. - From now on, away from the office, use the from-home address — it looks
like
https://nufi.box.nufi.me:3080— with the same login. Your drive is\\nufi.box.nufi.me\legal(Mac:smb://nufi.box.nufi.me/legal).
The key inside the join file works once and expires after an hour. If it did not work, or you are setting up a second laptop, ask for a new file. Back in the office, both addresses work; you do not have to change anything.
If your laptop is already on a company Tailscale network (some employers enrol laptops in one), the join file cannot connect it to a second one. Use a personal device, or ask your IT team.
When it does not work
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Your connection is not private" | Step 1, or click Advanced → Proceed. |
| The address does not open at all, in the office | Check you are on the office Wi-Fi, not a guest network. Try the box's plain address if you were given one, e.g. https://192.168.1.25:3080. |
| The address does not open, from home | Open the Tailscale app: is it connected? If not, or if it never connected, ask for a new join file. |
| The drive asks for a password you do not have | Ask your administrator — it is a separate password from your login. |
| You can open the drive but not write to it | Tell your administrator; it is fixed on the box, not on your laptop. |
| Your document does not show up in answers | Wait a minute after copying, then ask again naming the file. If it is still missing, ask your administrator to look at the box's log. |
| The agent answers from the wrong department | It cannot — each agent reads only its own folder. Check which agent you picked. |
